Complete Devotion: Like Water to Fish

In our journey with God, we're often confronted with the reality that following Jesus requires us to give up everything. Jesus Himself said in Luke 14:33, “So therefore, any one of you who does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple.” This is a challenging statement, one that calls us to total surrender. But why would God demand so much from us? Could it be that this demand is more about our well-being than about satisfying a need for control?

To understand this, let's consider an analogy: Imagine that God is like water, and we are like fish. For a fish, water is not just a nice addition to its environment—water is essential for its very survival. A fish might not always be aware of the water around it, but without it, the fish would perish. In the same way, God surrounds us and sustains us. He is the very source of life, the One who created us and knows exactly what we need to truly live.

Now, imagine a fish declaring, "I don’t need water!" It might sound absurd, but isn’t this sometimes how we act toward God? We might be tempted to believe that we can thrive on our own, independent of His presence and guidance. But just as a fish out of water would quickly die, we cannot truly live—spiritually, emotionally, or even physically—apart from God.

Isaiah 42:8 reminds us of God’s declaration: “I am the Lord; that is my name; my glory I give to no other, nor my praise to carved idols.” At first glance, this might seem like God is demanding glory for His own sake, like an egotistical king. But when we think of God as the water that sustains us, we begin to see this in a different light. God doesn’t seek our devotion because He needs it; He seeks it because we need Him. His demand for all of us—our hearts, minds, souls, and strength—is not about fulfilling a selfish desire but about ensuring our survival and flourishing in the life He offers.

When God says He must have all of us, He is like water saying to the fish, "You must be fully immersed in me because I am your life source." God’s demand for complete devotion is a reflection of His character—His love, mercy, and grace. By giving ourselves wholly to Him, we are not losing something, but rather gaining the fullness of life He intended for us. John 10:10 tells us, “I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” This abundant life is found in God alone.

Moreover, when we live fully devoted to God, His character is revealed through us, and this naturally brings glory to Him. Just as water reflects the light of the sun, our lives reflect the glory of God when we are immersed in Him. This is not about God being egotistical; it’s about His desire to reveal His goodness and love through the lives of His people. In this way, His glory is not something He hoards, but something He shares with us, allowing us to participate in His divine nature (2 Peter 1:4).

In conclusion, God’s call for our complete devotion is not a demand born out of pride but out of His deep love for us. He knows that apart from Him, we cannot truly live. Like fish need water, we need God to surround us, fill us, and sustain us. As we surrender all to Him, we discover the life He offers—abundant, eternal, and glorifying to His name. Let us, therefore, dive deep into the waters of His grace, knowing that in Him, we find our true life and purpose.
